One of the most frequent request we got is about real time dashboards. Those are pretty useful to get a continuous heartbeat of your web performance.
Using the Google Analytics reporting API, it’s possible to create a real time custom dashboard. Actually, it’s not “really” real time since Google Analytics’ data is refreshed about 30 minutes for most accounts. It can also take up to 48 hours for larger websites. So no matter how good we are at building real time custom dashboards, we can only refresh a dashboard as fast as Google Analytics refreshes its data.
That being said, a real time dashboard that is updated every 30 minutes is a pretty acceptable cost for most business cases.
Furthermore, Google Analytics recently launched their Real Time API. That means we can get the real time data as you can see in the real time report in your Google Analytics account. That can be pretty useful in some cases.
One thing we have to be careful about is the daily quota for each Google Analytics profile. The maximum daily requests any application can make to a single profile is 10,000. Plus, there’s a limit on the query per second. Fortunately, it’s easy to work with and it doesn’t impact much the dashboard flow and experience. More info about Google Analytics API’s quota.
