Set up an eCommerce tracking system to calculate item revenue in Google Analytics using Google Tag Manager. In Google Tag Manager, create a tag that captures product data, including the item_id, item name, price, and quantity sold, using Data Layer variables. Ensure that your eCommerce settings are enabled in Google Analytics 4. When a user performs an add_to_cart action, this data should be pushed to the Data Layer for tracking. Once configured, item revenue can be calculated automatically by Google Analytics through the eCommerce tracking feature, aggregating the total revenue from items sold during eCommerce purchases. You can then view this data in the “eCommerce” reports under “Conversions,” allowing you to analyze item revenue performance and other related metrics.

The item revenue calculation:

The formula is Item Revenue = Price per item × Quantity sold. For example, if a product is sold for $50 and 100 units are purchased, the total item revenue would be $5,000. This metric is valuable in marketing as it helps assess the performance of individual products, optimize sales strategies, and guide decisions around promotions and pricing.
