What is a backlink ?

Backlinks, or inbound links, are hyperlinks pointing back at your domain, from other domains. These types of links are important because they basically prove to search engines like Google, that your domain has high authority, in other words, that other websites think of you as a trustworthy resource. Having more backlinks should therefore improve your domain authority.

How to calculate your number of backlinks ?

There are multiple tools that can help you know how many backlinks you have. It can also tell you if they are high-quality backlinks if they are dofollow or nofollow links, new backlinks, and on what anchor text they have been placed. Tools such as Ahrefs, or Moz, can help you track your external links and create a backlink profile. You can track your data from both tools with DashThis.

What is a good number of backlinks?

A good way to know if you have enough backlinks is to look at the industry benchmark or your competitor's backlinks. Make sure you have at least the same number of backlinks as the websites you want to outrank. Overall the more backlinks the better, as long as they are acquired organically.

Backlinks best practices

Here are some of the best practices you should keep in mind while doing your link building.

Conversion rate best practices

step 1 icon Don't get too many backlinks at once

Building backlinks should be as natural and organic as possible, like most SEO or content marketing strategies. A website that suddenly goes from 0 to 1000 new links in a month on its homepage will most likely get flagged by the Google search engine's algorithm.

step 2 icon Keep an eye out for broken links

Site owners and bloggers don't want broken links on their websites, so why don't you suggest some quality content to replace their broken links? That's a great way to build high-quality links without being spammy or having to do guest blogging. Simply send an email outreach mentioning the broken links and suggest your own webpage (keep an eye out for your own broken links as well).

step 3 icon Quality links from quality websites

It can be tempting to get as many links as possible from as many different websites as you can, but the quality of your link profile is a very important ranking factor when it comes to link building. Low-quality backlinks can actually hurt your search engine ranking, whereas high-quality referring domains, even if you have much fewer website links, should help your page rank. You also want to diversify your type of backlinks: blog comments, testimonials, infographics, forums, web directories, resources page, podcasts, authoritative websites, etc.
